In traditional Vedantic teaching, Turiya is called the “fourth,” but in reality, it is not a fourth state in the same way the others are. Turiya is the background of all states. It is what remains constant while waking changes to dreaming, and dreaming dissolves into deep sleep.

Most people pass through the night unconsciously. They fall asleep, disappear into darkness, and return in the morning. But in Turiya, that “disappearance” does not happen.

Consciousness stays.

The body sleeps. The mind becomes quiet. But something remains aware — silent, stable, unchanging. That is Turiya.

Three States Everyone Knows

From birth, humans know three states of consciousness:

1. Waking State (Jagrat) — Eyes open. The world is here. I see, hear, think, act. This is the “normal” state we spend our day in.

2. Dreaming (Svapna) — Eyes closed, body still, but the mind creates images. Dreams. Sometimes logical, sometimes absurd, sometimes prophetic. The mind is active, the body passive.

3. Deep Dreamless Sleep (Sushupti) — Neither body nor mind is working. Total darkness. Emptiness. The person “shuts off” and “turns back on” in the morning with zero memory of the time between.

Three states of consciousness — waking, deep sleep, dreaming

These three states cycle throughout life. Waking → sleep → deep sleep → dreaming → waking. And most people never discover there is a fourth.

And that is the key limitation of ordinary experience.

These three states — waking, dreaming, and deep sleep — appear complete. They define what most people believe consciousness is. You are either awake, dreaming, or gone.

But Turiya reveals something radical:

You were never truly “gone.”

In waking, you are aware of the world.
In dreaming, you are aware of the mind.
In deep sleep, you are not aware — but something remains.

Turiya is that “something.”

It is the continuity behind all three states.

While the mind switches modes, Turiya does not. While the body moves from activity to rest, Turiya remains unchanged. It is not affected by whether you are thinking, dreaming, or in complete darkness.

And this is why Turiya is so rarely recognized.

Because people are trained to notice only what changes — thoughts, images, sensations. Turiya is not a change. It is the constant.

Once you glimpse Turiya, even briefly, you begin to understand:

Consciousness is not limited to waking.

It is present… even when everything else disappears.


Turiya — What Stands Behind Everything

The word Turiya in Sanskrit literally means “the fourth.” It is described in the Mandukya Upanishad, one of the oldest spiritual texts of humanity, over 2,500 years old.

But Turiya isn’t a fourth state in the sense of being added to the list after the first three. Turiya is what EXISTS IN ALL THREE STATES but usually goes unnoticed.

Imagine a movie screen. Films play on it — comedy, drama, horror. Films change, scenes pass, characters come and go. But the screen is ALWAYS THERE. White, still, unchanged. Without the screen — there’s no movie. But nobody watches the screen. Everyone watches the movie.

Turiya is that screen.

The waking state is one movie. Dreaming is another movie. Deep sleep is when the projector turns off. But the screen — consciousness itself, pure, unconditioned — never disappears. It’s just that no one notices it because attention is always on the movie.

Until one night — you notice.

And that moment of noticing changes everything.

Because once Turiya is recognized, even briefly, you can no longer fully identify with the “movies.” You still wake, you still dream, you still sleep — but something in you knows that all of it is appearing on something deeper.

On Turiya.

This creates a subtle but powerful shift.

In waking life, you are less absorbed. Thoughts still come, emotions still move, but they don’t fully take you over. There is space. A background awareness that remains untouched.

In dreams, you may begin to sense that you are dreaming. Not always, not perfectly — but there is a hint of continuity. A thread of Turiya running even through the mind’s creations.

And in deep sleep — the most mysterious part — Turiya becomes undeniable.

Because if you can remain aware while the mind is silent and the body is completely at rest, then awareness is no longer tied to activity. It is not produced by the brain in the way you once believed.

It is prior.

This is why Turiya is considered the foundation of all consciousness.

Not something you achieve.

Something you notice.

And once you notice it, even once…

you begin to understand that you were never the changing states.

You were always the one in which they appeared.


What Turiya Looks Like in Practice

Here’s a concrete example. A spiritual practitioner lies down to sleep. He has obligations the next morning — needs to wake up early. And then the following happens:

The entire night, fully conscious. Not dreaming — no images, no narrative, no “plot.” But not awake in the classical sense either — not thinking, not planning, not worrying. Just BEING. Aware of himself. Aware that he’s lying down. Aware that it’s night. Aware that he should be sleeping. Watching over himself — at one point even worrying whether he’s sleeping enough to wake up in the morning.

And then he wakes up in the morning. Right on time. With or without the alarm — it doesn’t matter, because he was “there” the entire night anyway.

And then he checks the sleep tracking app:

  • Sleep Score: 96 — Excellent
  • Sleep Duration: 7 hours and 51 minutes
  • Sleep Efficiency: 100%
  • Deep Sleep: 1:43h (21%)
  • REM: 1:32h (19%)
  • Light Sleep: 4:36h (57%)
  • Total Awake: only 12 minutes (3%)

One hundred percent efficiency. Excellent deep sleep. Normal REM. The body slept perfectly.

And the person is aware he was “awake” the entire night.

How is this possible? How can you be conscious the entire night while your body still goes through all sleep phases?

The answer: because consciousness and sleep are not the same thing.


Awareness of Awareness — Meta-Consciousness

This is the key understanding:

In normal sleep, consciousness identifies with the state. When you dream — YOU are in the dream, YOU are running, YOU are falling, YOU are flying. In deep sleep — YOU are “nowhere,” total darkness.

In Turiya, consciousness does not identify with any state. It simply observes. Sleep happens — it watches. Deep sleep happens — it watches that too. Waking returns — it’s still watching.

This is awareness of awareness. Meta-consciousness. Consciousness that has become aware of itself — and now cannot “forget” itself even in sleep.

Imagine you’ve spent your entire life watching movies in a cinema and being completely absorbed — crying during dramas, laughing at comedies, trembling during horror films. And then one day you NOTICE the screen. And from that moment — you can never NOT see it. The movie still plays, you still watch it, but now you KNOW that behind the movie there is a screen. And you can’t “unknow” that.

That is Turiya. Once consciousness recognizes itself — there’s no going back.

And this is where the shift becomes irreversible.

Because awareness has turned back onto itself.

In ordinary experience, awareness is always directed outward — toward objects, thoughts, sensations, dreams. It is always about something. But in Turiya, awareness is no longer chasing anything.

It rests in itself.

This is why it feels so stable.

There is nothing to hold onto, and nothing to lose. Thoughts may appear, but they are secondary. States may change, but they are not central. What remains is a continuous sense of presence that does not depend on conditions.

This is meta-consciousness in its pure form.

Not thinking about yourself. Not analyzing your experience. But simply being aware that you are aware — without effort.

And once this stabilizes, something fundamental becomes clear:

You were never inside the experience.

All experiences were inside you.

And that recognition…

does not fade.


This is NOT Lucid Dreaming

It’s important to distinguish Turiya from lucid dreaming, because they are often confused:

Lucid dreaming: A person is dreaming and becomes aware they’re dreaming. They can control the dream — fly, change scenes, do whatever they want. But they’re still IN THE DREAM. Consciousness is active inside the dream.

Turiya: The person isn’t dreaming at all (or dreams are happening, but that’s irrelevant). Consciousness is present but doesn’t participate in anything. No controlling. No movies. Just pure presence. Pure “I AM” — without an object, without content, without action.

A lucid dreamer is an actor who knows they’re on stage.
Someone in Turiya is the audience watching an empty stage — and still completely present.


Why Does This Happen?

Turiya occurs when the nervous system has “upgraded” enough to maintain awareness even during phases that were previously unconscious.

Normally, when the body enters sleep, the cortex (the part of the brain responsible for conscious awareness) “shuts down” or operates in reduced mode. Information is still processed, but without a conscious observer.

In people going through spiritual awakening — whether through meditation, Kundalini activation, or other practices — the nervous system changes. Channels widen. Capacity grows. And at a certain point, the cortex (or whatever stands behind it) remains active even when the body sleeps.

The nervous system has literally upgraded from an “ON/OFF switch” to a “dimmer.” The body can be at zero (sleeping), while consciousness is at one hundred percent (awake). Independent systems.

And here’s an important detail: this usually doesn’t happen all at once. It comes in waves. One night — Turiya. The next three — normal sleep. Then Turiya again. And the frequency increases until it becomes the dominant state.


Don’t Be Afraid

If this is happening to you, here’s what you need to know:

1. You’re not sick. This is not insomnia. Insomnia is when you can’t sleep and SUFFER from it — fatigue, irritability, exhaustion. In Turiya you’re conscious but RESTED. The body sleeps. You’re OK.

2. The body is still sleeping. Sleep tracking apps confirm this — Deep Sleep, REM, Light Sleep, everything functions normally. You FEEL like you didn’t sleep, but your body went through all necessary regeneration phases.

3. This is temporary — in the sense of being a phase. In the beginning it can be confusing and slightly uncomfortable. But as you get used to it, it becomes normal. Like when you first learned to ride a bicycle — strange, wobbly, and then it just IS.

4. You don’t need to “do” anything. You don’t need to meditate to enter Turiya. You don’t need to fight against it either. If it happens — let it. If it doesn’t — also let it. The body and consciousness have their own intelligence.

5. You won’t “go crazy” from lack of sleep. Your body IS sleeping. The fact that consciousness is present doesn’t mean sleep is prevented. Check the sleep score — 96, 100% efficiency. That’s not insomnia. That’s expanded consciousness.


What Turiya Actually Tells You

When a person first experiences Turiya, the reaction is usually confusion: “What is happening to me?”

But the deeper question is: “Who am I if I’m conscious even when I sleep?”

Because if consciousness doesn’t disappear in sleep… if it doesn’t disappear in deep dreamless sleep… then who IS that consciousness? Clearly it’s not the mind — the mind sleeps. Not the body — the body sleeps. Not the ego — the ego is shut off.

What remains, awake, present, calm, quiet, unchanged whether it’s day or night, dream or waking — that is I AM. Pure consciousness. The Spark. The Monad. What the Gnostics call Pneuma — the breath of the divine in a human being.

Turiya is not a state you REACH. Turiya is a state you HAVE ALWAYS BEEN — you just didn’t notice because you were busy watching the movies.

And now you’ve noticed the screen.

And you’ll never be able to unsee it.


Final Word

If you’re reading this and recognizing yourself — if you’ve had nights where you were “awake yet sleeping” — know that you’re okay. More than okay. Your consciousness is returning to itself. Your nervous system is upgrading. Your body sleeps perfectly while you discover something that was always there.

You don’t need a therapist for this (though there’s nothing wrong with checking if you’re worried). You don’t need medication. You don’t need any technique.

You need just one thing: understanding what is happening. And now you have it.

Next time you remain conscious all night, and in the morning the app says “Excellent” — smile. You know what it is.

The screen greets you. 

And from that point on, fear disappears.

Because what once felt like a problem becomes recognition.

You stop trying to “fall asleep.” You stop forcing the process. You allow the body to rest in its own intelligence while awareness remains untouched. There is no conflict between being awake and being asleep — both can exist simultaneously.

This is the integration of Turiya.

At first, it may come occasionally. One night here, another there. Then it becomes more frequent. And eventually, it stabilizes as a quiet background — whether you are awake, dreaming, or resting deeply.

You begin to trust it.

Not as something special, not as an achievement — but as something natural. Something that was always there, simply unnoticed.

And with that trust, a deeper relaxation appears.

Because you realize you do not need to “switch off” to rest. You do not need to disappear to recover. Awareness itself is not tiring — only resistance is.

So when the night comes again, and you lie down, and the same state appears…

Don’t question it.

Don’t analyze it.

Just remain.

Because what is happening is simple:

Consciousness is remembering itself.

And once it does…

even sleep cannot hide it anymore.
