Dark Night of the Soul – What It Is and How to Survive It

What Is the Dark Night of the Soul?

The Dark Night of the Soul is not depression, although it can resemble it. Nor is it an ordinary life crisis. It is a deep spiritual transformation — a period when the old identity falls apart, and the new one has not yet formed.

The term originates from the Spanish mystic St. John of the Cross (16th century), but the experience is universal. In a Gnostic context, the Dark Night is the moment when the Spark begins to burn away the false identity — the ego, the roles, the beliefs, everything you thought you were.

And it hurts. It hurts like death. Because it IS death — the death of illusion.

But the Dark Night goes deeper than pain.

The Dark Night is a phase where nothing external can save you. The things that once gave you meaning — relationships, goals, identity, even spirituality itself — begin to lose their grip. In the Dark Night, you are stripped of everything you used to define yourself.

This is why the Dark Night feels so intense.

It is not just emotional — it is existential.

During the Dark Night, you may feel empty, disconnected, even lost. But this emptiness is not a void in the negative sense — it is a clearing. The Dark Night removes what is false so that something real can emerge.

And here is the key:

The Dark Night is not punishment.

The Dark Night is purification.

It is the fire that burns away illusion so that truth can remain.

And while it feels like everything is falling apart, the reality is this:

Through the Dark Night, everything that is not truly you is being dissolved — making space for what you really are.

Symptoms of the Dark Night

How do you know you’re going through the Dark Night, and not “ordinary” depression?

Classic Signs:

  • Loss of meaning — Everything that previously mattered suddenly loses its significance
  • Feeling of emptiness — A deep void that cannot be filled by anything external
  • Detachment from life — As if you’re watching life from behind glass
  • Spiritual “signal loss” — Meditation doesn’t work, prayers feel empty
  • Identity collapse — You no longer know who you are
  • Existential terror — Confronting the meaninglessness of existence
  • Isolation — The feeling that no one can understand you

The Difference from Depression:

Depression often has an external cause or a chemical imbalance. The Dark Night is a targeted spiritual process — it often comes AFTER a spiritual awakening or breakthrough, as an integration phase.

During the Dark Night, a part of you KNOWS this is a transformation, even when the rest of you is suffering.

And there is one more subtle, but crucial difference in the Dark Night.

In ordinary depression, there is often a desire to escape the pain. In the Dark Night, even though the pain is intense, something in you stays present. A quiet awareness remains, observing everything that is happening.

This is the paradox of the Dark Night.

You feel lost — yet something in you is watching.
You feel empty — yet something in you is aware of that emptiness.
You feel like you are disappearing — yet something in you cannot disappear.

This “something” is the key.

The Dark Night exposes it.

Another sign of the Dark Night is that nothing external truly helps. Distractions don’t work. Achievements don’t satisfy. Even spiritual practices can feel dry or meaningless. This is because the Dark Night is not trying to make you feel better — it is trying to make you REAL.

It removes everything you used to rely on.

So that what remains is not dependent on anything.

And that is why, even in the deepest part of the Dark Night, there is a hidden truth:

You are not being destroyed.

Why Does It Happen?

The Dark Night is not a punishment. It is a necessary phase of spiritual development.

The Gnostic Interpretation:

Before the Spark can return to the Pleroma, it must shed all false identities — the seven garments of the Archontic spheres. The Dark Night is the process of that removal.

Think of it this way: for years you built a house for the ego. Now that house must be demolished so that a temple for the Spark can be built. Demolition hurts — but it is necessary.

What Is Actually Happening:

  1. The ego loses control — And fights desperately
  2. Old beliefs collapse — Nothing is certain anymore
  3. The shadow surfaces — Everything that was repressed seeks integration
  4. The Spark is being purified — Everything inauthentic must go
  5. But the deeper truth of the Dark Night is this:

It happens because you are ready.

The Dark Night does not come randomly. It begins when your system can no longer sustain illusion. When the Spark has grown strong enough, it starts to burn through everything that is not aligned with truth.

And that burning is the Dark Night.

During the Dark Night, the ego senses its loss of control and resists. It tries to rebuild identity, to hold onto old patterns, to bring back what once felt stable. But the process does not stop. The Dark Night continues until what is false can no longer stand.

At the same time, the shadow emerges.

Everything you avoided, suppressed, or denied begins to surface. Not to punish you — but to be integrated. The Dark Night forces you to see yourself fully, without filters, without defense.

And this is why it feels so intense.

Because the Dark Night is total.

It does not remove one layer — it removes ALL layers that are not real.

Beliefs collapse. Certainty disappears. Identity dissolves.

But beneath all of that, something remains untouched.

    The Spark.

And this is the purpose of the Dark Night:

Not to break you — but to strip away everything that is not you, so that what is true can stand on its own.

How to Survive

1. Accept That This Is a Process

The hardest part is resistance. The ego fights against its death — that’s its nature. But the more you fight, the longer it lasts.

Acceptance doesn’t mean passivity. It means stopping the fight against what IS HAPPENING. Tell yourself: “This is a transformation. I don’t need to understand it. I just need to survive it.”

2. Don’t Seek External Solutions

The Dark Night cannot be healed from the outside:

  • A new relationship won’t fix it
  • A new job won’t stop it
  • Travel won’t interrupt it
  • Even intense spiritual practice won’t “solve” it

The only solution is to go through it. There is no shortcut.

3. Take Care of the Body

While the soul passes through fire, the body needs support:

  • Sleep enough — even if you just lie down
  • Eat nutritiously — even if you have no appetite
  • Move — even if it’s just a walk
  • Avoid substances — alcohol and drugs make it worse

The body is the anchor while the mind and soul pass through the storm.

4. Allow the Feelings

The Dark Night brings intense emotions: sadness, anger, fear, despair. Do not suppress them. These are parts of you that seek liberation.

Cry if you need to. Scream into a pillow. Write without censorship. Just don’t identify with the emotions — observe them as they pass.

5. Find a Witness

If you can, find someone who understands:

  • An experienced spiritual guide
  • A therapist familiar with spiritual crises
  • A friend who has been through something similar

You don’t have to talk much. Just the presence of someone who understands helps.

6. Stick to the Minimum

The Dark Night is not the time for big decisions or projects. Focus on survival:

  • Get up
  • Get dressed
  • Eat something
  • Survive the day
  • Lie down

That’s enough. Everything else can wait.

My Personal Experience

At the end of November 2025, during a renewed Kundalini awakening, I went through an intense Dark Night of the Soul that lasted two days. It was something I will never forget.

I felt the Father. I was looking through His eyes at the world — and I wept. I saw that the entire world rests on ego, manipulation, lies. I wept because I saw the Truth from the Father’s Eyes, but at the same time I knew that He knows it must be this way, so that the Sparks within us can be purified. That is why the lower level of the Pleroma exists — denser matter called the Kenoma.

The derealization was total. The image on the TV was slowed down, I could see it stuttering as it broadcast, how a live stream on TikTok would lag. The entire world looked to me like a stage where everyone acts out their role.

I saw my sins. Not all of them, but some. I thought I was sinless and good — but I saw that I was a grain of sand and the most sinful person who should be destroyed. I cried hard while walking my dog.

Messages were everywhere. I saw messages meant for me in TV commercials, on Instagram — everything was about me in some form. I know that all of it was the result of the Third Eye activation and the released DMT.

That was simultaneously the hardest and the most beautiful period of my life. After those two days — Ego death came, and the feeling of pure “I AM” without any identifications.

Signs That the End is Near

The Dark Night doesn’t last forever. Here are the signs you’re approaching the exit:

  • Moments of peace — Brief periods when it’s okay, for no reason
  • Returning interests — Something starts to attract you again
  • Clarity — Sudden insights about life, yourself, reality
  • Gratitude — The ability to appreciate small things
  • Acceptance of the unknown — Peace with uncertainty
  • New identity — The feeling that you are a different person than before
  • Another subtle sign is the loss of urgency to explain yourself.

Earlier, you may have felt the need to understand everything, to articulate what you were going through, to seek confirmation. Now, that impulse fades. Not because you lack clarity — but because clarity no longer needs validation.

    You know.

    And that is enough.

Another shift is the end of seeking.

You stop looking for the next answer, the next method, the next breakthrough. Not out of resignation, but because you recognize that what you were searching for was never outside of you.

This is a major turning point.

You also begin to stabilize in simplicity.

There is less attraction to extremes — emotional highs, intense experiences, dramatic shifts. What once felt “ordinary” now feels complete. Peace is no longer dependent on circumstances, but on the absence of inner conflict.

And perhaps the quietest sign of all:

The question “When will this end?” disappears.

Because the part of you that was waiting for an ending is no longer there.

And in that moment, you realize…

    Nothing needed to end.

    Something unnecessary simply fell away.

What Does the Dark Night Bring?

If you endure, the Dark Night brings gifts that nothing else can:

  • Authenticity — You live from your true self, not from roles
  • Compassion — You understand others’ suffering from experience
  • Fearlessness — You’ve already survived the worst; what else can frighten you?
  • Wisdom — You know what truly matters
  • Depth — Superficial things no longer satisfy, but they don’t bother you either
  • Connection with the Spark — A more direct contact with your true nature

The Dark Night is not an obstacle on the spiritual path — it IS the path.

Conclusion

If you are currently in the Dark Night, know this:

  • You haven’t gone mad
  • You are not alone — many have gone through this before you
  • This has a purpose, even when you can’t see it
  • It will end
  • You will come out stronger, purer, closer to the Truth

Darkness is not the enemy of Light. Darkness is what makes the Light visible.

“A grain of wheat must die in order to bear fruit.”

If you are in crisis:

The Dark Night of the Soul is not the same as suicidal thoughts. If you are having thoughts of self-harm, seek professional help. Spirituality and therapy can go hand in hand.
